YTN’s patience has ended – a strike warning to the technology industry

The Federation of Professional and Managerial Staff YTN has issued a strike warning to selected companies in the technology industry, starting on Friday 28 February. There will be one-day strikes on four consecutive Fridays. In addition, a so-called ban on flexible working has been announced for the entire branch from 14 February to 22 March. During this time, senior salaried employees will not work flexitime hours or travel for work in their free time.

“The negotiation organisation has been negotiating on the collective agreement for senior salaried employees in the technology industry with poor results since September 2024. Despite the negotiations, the employers have not been willing or able to even agree on the texts.

“We have also submitted a salary settlement proposal to the employer before Christmas, but they have not yet been able to respond to it. When nothing progresses, options are scarce,” says Samu Salo, Chairman of YTN.

YTN’s goal is to achieve a salary settlement that develops purchasing power and focuses on general increases for its members working in the technology industry contract branch. With regard to the texts of the collective agreement, YTN would be willing to accept the current texts but this is not the case for the Technology Industry Employers of Finland.

“They have requirements and reductions for the texts that we do not accept. The pressure measures send a message that some limit has now been crossed and that our members are ready to defend their terms of employment,” says Salo.

Teemu Hankamäki, Negotiation Manager of YTN, emphasises that the negotiation organisation has wished to reach an agreement through negotiations.

“Unfortunately, the other party does not seem to appreciate this much. Since September, we have been under the impression that an agreement solution would have been available to senior salaried employees through negotiations and a constructive approach, but our belief has proved to be false,” says Hankamäki. “With the strike warning, the process is now transferred to the National Conciliator, which I hope will promote the reaching of a mutual understanding and an agreement,” he continues.

In terms of the people represented, the collective agreement of YTN’s technology industry is Finland’s second largest industrial collective agreement. It applies to more than 60,000 senior salaried employees and experts working in the industry. YTN is the largest contractual partner of the Technology Industry Employers of Finland when all three agreements between the organisations are combined.
