Strike begins in IT services sector as employers turn down settlement proposal

A last-ditch conciliation proposal seeking to settle the collective bargaining dispute in the Finnish IT services sector was rejected by the employers on Sunday 6.11. The proposal was acceptable to both of the trade unions involved in the dispute: the Federation of Professional and Managerial Staff YTN and the Association of IT sector employees. Both YTN and the IT sector employees are bargaining for salary increases in line with the national incomes policy framework settlement, and this formed one component of the settlement proposal. However, the employers were also seeking additional terms and conditions falling short of the framework settlement, and accordingly resisted the last-minute attempt at conciliation.
YTN chief negotiator Jani Huhtamella feels that a sense of incredulity now characterises the situation. “Though this is not altogether surprising, as the employers have behaved inconsistently throughout the bargaining process.”
The first stage of the strike in the IT services sector begins at 06.00 on Monday 7 November and is due to end on Sunday 13 November. If no settlement has been achieved, then the strike will expand as of Tuesday 15 November. Details of strike pay and other practicalities will be available on Monday.
