The Executive Board of the Federation of Professional and Managerial Staff (YTN) today approved a pay settlement for senior salaried employees in the technology industries in line with the recommendation of an industry background group.

An acceptable format for direct deduction of trade union subscriptions by the employer at Nokia Siemens Networks was also formulated before the meeting of the Executive Board.

The pay settlement will enlarge the payroll for senior salaried employees in the sector by 1.5 per cent in October, of which one per cent will be paid as a general salary increase and the remaining 0.5 per cent will take the form of a local element payable in accordance with guidelines formulated by the negotiating federations. Larger salary increases may occur where so agreed through local collective bargaining in September focusing on the financial position of individual enterprises.

“We approved the pay settlement in plain recognition of the fact that there are differences in the financial situations of various businesses, and so local settlements exceeding 1.5 per cent may also arise,” explains YTN President Heikki Kauppi, stressing that the negotiations between YTN and the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries clearly recognised the fact that profitable enterprises could afford to pay higher salary increases.

“The one per cent pay ceiling announced by the Confederation of Finnish Industries – EK seems particularly strange in the light of this.”

At its meeting on 24 August the background group of YTN industry shop stewards expressed the view that this would be a challenging pay rise format, and predicted a difficult round of local pay negotiations in industry enterprises. The background group nevertheless considered the settlement to be a tolerable one as Finland seeks to fight an economic recession.

About 60,000 senior salaried employees work in the technology industries as supervisors and in demanding specialist positions, making them the second largest staff group in the sector.

The Federation of Professional and Managerial Staff (YTN) is a private sector collective bargaining organisation of the Confederation of Unions for Professional and Managerial Staff in Finland – AKAVA. YTN is responsible at AKAVA for collective bargaining on behalf of senior salaried employees in industry, commerce and services, defending the labour market interests of some 138,000 union members.
