YTN IT service sector – Finland breathes the code

Negotiations for the normally binding national collective agreement in the IT service sector are underway for the winter 2024-2025.

  • The views of the parties involved in the collective bargaining negotiations for the IT service sector moved closer regarding textual issues in today’s (December 20) meeting. Despite this progress, a final resolution was not reached. The negotiations will now pause for the Christmas break and are scheduled to resume on January 8, 2025. Should any changes occur in the labor market, the parties are prepared to resume negotiations earlier. (latest update 20th Dec at 12:54)

The IT service sector is one of the fastest growing and attractive sectors within Finland’s sector. Almost 60,000 persons work in the field, for example, in the following sectors:

  • Software development and consultancy
  • Server and database solutions
  • Mobile applications
  • Game designing and production
  • IT hardware and consultancy
  • Repair and service of point-of-sale systems
  • Virtual and added reality
  • Artificial intelligence

The biggest employers in Finland are, among other things, CGI, Tieto, F-Secure, Fujitsu, Rovio, Accenture, Supercell and Digia.

Collective labour agreement

The IT service sector has a national collective labour agreement that applies to those employees who work for a company that is a member of the Technology Industry Employers of Finland. The current collective agreement is valid from March 3, 2023, to November 30, 2024. (However, it can be terminated to end on November 30, 2023, by giving written notice no later than October 31, 2023.) There are also several company-specific collective agreements in the sector.

Among other things, the following has been agreed on in the collective labour agreement of the IT service sector:

  • Minimum wages
  • Working hours
  • Overtime work
  • Sick leave
  • Compensation for travelling time
  • Paid family leaves
  • Standby
  • Other remuneration

Even though the collective labour agreement is comprehensive, it still provides quite an extensive possibility to agree on matters locally at a company level.
